Do I Need an Inspection To Renew My Tags in Louisiana?
Yes, an inspection is required to renew your vehicle tags in Louisiana. The state mandates safety inspections and emissions testing for most vehicles as part of the registration renewal process.
Under Louisiana Revised Statutes 32:1304, the state requires an annual inspection of every registered motor vehicle, trailer, semitrailer, and pole trailer. The inspection covers the vehicle's mechanism, brakes, and equipment.
Vehicles registered in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, Iberville, Livingston, and West Baton Rouge parishes must also undergo emissions testing as part of the annual inspection. The emissions inspection applies to gasoline-fueled vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less.
Louisiana issues inspection stickers displayed on the lower left corner of the windshield as certificates of inspection. This serves as proof that the vehicle has passed required safety and emissions checks. Registration plates remain on the rear of vehicles.
Exemptions and Special Circumstances
Certain vehicles are exempt from inspection requirements under Louisiana Revised Statutes 32:1311. Motor vehicles 25 years old or older registered as antique and used primarily for exhibition in shows, parades, and tours rather than general transportation are exempt. New vehicles are exempt from emissions inspection for the first two years of registration.
